With fall camp rapidly approaching, there is one question on the minds of the Irish Faithful. Who will be the starting quarterback in the fall? While most have seemed to anoint CJ Carr, the proclaimed savior of Notre Dame Football by pundits, as the natural successor of Riley Leonard, is it too soon to be counting out Minchey?
Kenny Minchey joined the 2023 recruiting class extremely late as Tommy Rees and Freeman focused more on QBs like 5-star Dante Moore and Austin Novosad. While the two were held in a higher regard by recruiting sites, Minchey was by no means a low-rated prospect. Minchey was a Top 10 consensus QB in the class of 2023 and an Elite 11 Finalist, which saw him win the Pro Day Competition. The same competition that saw CJ Stroud and Tua Tagovila come out victorious. While this demonstrates his passing prowess, by no means will that be the reason Minchey would beat out Carr. It would be due to his changeup pitch: his legs.
Minchey is a good athlete who can use his legs to extend and salvage plays and drives. By no means can Minchey have the usage of a Leonard and succeed, but he can still offer that same tight yardage, get that first down, an ability Leonard had that saved him when he and the receivers weren’t clicking. This will have to be the reason Minchey wins out. It will have to be that Minchey’s legs will transform the Mike Denbrock run offense to the point where it is malpractice to keep him off the field.
